Life Hacks for the holidays

We all know it can feel virtually impossible to make it through the holidays without extra calories and stress. That being said, here are five great life hacks to help keep you smiling instead of screaming!

#1 Gift giving –Try to think on a bigger scale when it comes to checking off your list of neighbours, distant family and those you just want to have something for. There are many options for something home-made that can be completed in a large batch. Gluten-free cookies, chocolate-drizzled popcorn with walnuts or small but useful craft items can keep things on budget and keep you sane. One afternoon of prep and you’ll have a load of spare gifts throughout the season (also handy for those “uh-ph, I have nothing to give you” surprises that always come up). Searching “simple gifts for Christmas” brought me to Jaimelyn’s blog with 101+ cost-efficient ideas. Check it out for more great DIY gifts!

#2 Portion control –This applies to food and to alcohol. When the parties start, look at the events from a weekly perspective and be honest with yourself about how much you’ll indulge. Set a reasonable amount for each event, and stick to it. Red wine and vodka-based drinks (soda water and lime anyone?) are your best options for alcohol. Snacking is an obvious by-product of socializing, so head for the veggie tray and, when meal time comes, cut your portion size in half and make sure half your plate is vegetable based. Include gym visits or walking in your schedule and stay hydrated; those plans will help you stay on track.

#3 Shopping –Think outside the “big box” and shop at local stores instead. Consider your favourite things and pair them with friends or family with similar tastes who may benefit from sampling something you already love. If the mall is a must, have a plan. Create a short list, look up the mall directory and plan your route. Eat a healthy meal in advance and bring a water bottle. A couple of short trips will keep you happier than one, long torture session. And mentally prepare for the parking challenge!

#4 Breathe –You can’t control traffic, inconsiderate people or line-ups, so be ready to use some breathing techniques to help get you through the season. One of my favourites? Breathe in deeply through your nose for five seconds, hold the breath for five seconds and then slowly exhale through your mouth for five seconds. I promise you will feel better – and no one will be the wiser. Otherwise, sing a favourite song in your head or put in your ear buds to pass the time. Plus, you won’t have to put up with the endless holiday music.

#5 Gratitude! –Keep the season in perspective. There are many countries and populations that are not as fortunate as we are, so try to remind yourself of that when you’re facing yet another lengthy line. Think about the people you’ll get to spend time with, and the hugs and laughs you’ll get to share over the next few weeks. Focus on what makes you feel grateful about that, then hold the door open for the person behind you. Paying it forward also makes you feel great.

Happy Holidays!
